Science is not a subject you learn at school. It’s life. We are wrapped by it, in it, with it” (Neil deGrasse Tyson; Astrophysicist)
Science is part of our every day and at Secret Harbour Primary School we lead the way in facilitating our students to become scientific thinkers. We encourage them to explore the world they live in and the universe around them, learn from it, identify problems and discover and create solutions.
Each student from year 1 to 6 is taught Science by a specialist Science Teacher. Kindy and Pre- Primary students have their Science curriculum delivered by their classroom teachers. Our Science laboratory has recently been upgraded and the very latest technology and resources are available to enhance student learning.
In line with the Australian Curriculum, Science is taught across three interrelated strands: Science Understanding, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Inquiry Skills. The Science Understanding strand is comprised of four sub-strands: Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences and Earth and Space Sciences.
We believe that children learn better by “doing”, therefore the Scientific Inquiry process is at the heart of our teaching. Students identify investigable questions, make predictions, carry out experiments, record, interpret and analyse data and communicate their findings to others.
In order to reinforce to our students that Science does not occur in isolation students participate in activities in their Science time which are linked to other school and community initiatives including Clean UP Australia Day, Book Week and NAIDOC Week. Science is also honoured annually with Science Week celebrations.
Some of our year 4 students have been working with Mr Balliet and have created a Science Movie. Click on the link to have a look at their latest movie.
