We are very proud of our wonderful music program at Secret Harbour Primary School. As well as building musical skills, we support each child in developing a life-long love of music. Our students are encouraged to actively participate in a safe, supportive environment.
The music program is implemented from Year one to six, and includes weekly music lessons; developing sequential, developmental skills and concepts. The teaching emphasis is on active music-making with students performing, composing, improvising, playing singing/rhyming games, dancing, moving and playing instruments. A variety of instruments are employed in the classroom, with voice as a prime focus. Children engage enthusiastically with percussion instruments (including glockenspiel and xylophone), recorder, keyboard and ukulele.
- Year 1& 2: Voice, untuned percussion instruments & basic exploration of tuned percussion
- Year 3: Voice, tuned and untuned percussion instruments & basic exploration of ukulele
- Year 4, 5, 6: Voice, tuned and untuned percussion instruments, ukulele, keyboard and recorder.
We emphasise active music making and bringing joy through music. Students regularly engage in community singing and activities such as our annual Talent Show, Harmony Day, Book week, NAIDOC Week and Music Count Us In.
Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) Program
The IMSS program is staffed and run by the education department. Qualified Instrumental Music teachers come to our school each week to deliver targeted lessons to small groups of year five and six students. All year four students have the opportunity to sit a Musical Aptitude Test and to seek access to the IMSS program. Classroom music results are also used to determine suitability. As SHPS we offer IMSS Music lessons in brass, clarinet, percussion, guitar and flute. IMSS offers instrument loan for year five students. IMSS students are encouraged to join the Concert Band and perform for audiences as their skills develop. The IMSS program continues through into state high schools for eligible students.
