Phys Ed

At Secret Harbour Primary School we value the importance of being physically active. Regular physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and mental wellbeing. To support all of our students, we have several programs to encourage participation and develop skills essential for life-long participation and enjoyment.

In the early years (Kindy and Pre-primary) and Junior Primary classes (years 1 and 2), students are on a journey of discovery that allows them to develop body management, loco-motor and object control skills. Collectively these are known as Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS). These skills are then combined to create simple patterns that will later be used in play, games, dance, sports and other recreational activities.

Body Management Skills Rolling, Stopping, Bending, Twisting, Landing, Stretching, Climbing, Static & Dynamic Balancing, Turning
Loco-motor Skills Crawling, Running, Galloping, Walking, Hopping, Skipping, Dodging
Object Control Skills Throwing, Catching, Striking, Bouncing, Dribbling, Kicking

In Years 3 and 4 students refine their fundamental movement skills and develop their ability to apply these in games and play. Students apply their growing understanding of simple rules for safety and fairness (including everyone) and how rules can assist with scoring. Students also develop their understanding of the benefits of regular physical activity and fitness as well as improved sleep and social skills.

The focus of FMS in Years 5 and 6 turns to performing these skills under pressure in game situations. Students experiment with time, space and effort and the effect of these on their skill performance under the pressure of game situations. Students consider the roles and responsibilities of players, coaches and umpires and their ethical behaviours and how these can influence participation, conflicts and disagreements. In years 5 and 6 students are encouraged to participate in interschool carnivals to consolidate their understanding of movement and to apply appropriate and effective strategies.

At Secret harbour Primary School students are encouraged to meet daily physical activity recommendations. Our programs include daily morning fitness activities, specialist PE lessons and clinics and our whole school sport program.

Every student must have a sun smart hat (bucket or wide brimmed style) that is clearly labelled with their name. This is a requirement for all outside activities including lesson time, recess and lunch play. Students may not be allowed to participate in some aspects of outside activities without a hat. Students are encouraged to bring their own water bottle for all aspects of the school day to ensure students stay well hydrated.
